How a positive attitude at work can fuel both customers’ and employees’ overall happiness.
When you ask the majority of people on this planet what they desire the most, the majority will without a doubt say to be happy. Several surveys and research papers have been written about happiness and its pursuit of it. So the big question, that a lot of us ask ourselves is – how do I achieve happiness?
Happiness means something different for everyone and there are probably as many definitions of what happiness is as there are people living on planet Earth. We do know, it is impossible to be happy all the time and there tend to be a lot of misconceptions about what βbeing happyβ actually means.
My next anecdote for sure shows that it might have to do with having a positive attitude at work. And although there are several misconceptions about what being positive means as well, this example should shed some light on it.
A while back I went to work at a cafΓ© to change the scenery and find new inspiration. The following scene played out right in front of me:
The waiter had just taken the order of two customers and one of them had asked for a salad without any dressing. When the waiter had brought the orders to the table the cook came out to check on the customers. He wanted to make sure, that the customer did not want any dressing, not even on the side or another one, not on the menu. In this case, the customer just preferred his salad without dressing. The cook and the customer did not speak the same language, however, the cook tried his very best to communicate with the customer giving it a go in Dutch, Arabic, and Italian. The customer turned out to be Brazilian. You could tell from the customer’s facial expression, that he really did not expect this kind of personalized service from the cook and that it had made his lunch experience just that much more positive and memorable. At the same time, you could see the cook feeling happy and satisfied and reassured, that he had made his customer happy.
So as a result of having a positive attitude and reassuring himself that the order was correct, he elevated both his workday and the customer’s lunch experience to the next level.
This kind of experience made my day as well! Would you agree? And if not, I am of course very curious to hear why!
Wishing everyone a productive day!
Over and Out!
